Independent Coffee Maker Testing & Editorial Standards
At MakerGuides, we test coffee makers and precision brewers using calibrated thermocouple sensors, digital refractometers, and thermal imaging cameras to provide home coffee drinkers with objective, empirical recommendations.
Our 4-Stage Brewer Testing Protocol
We position Type-K thermocouple probes directly at the showerhead exit and inside the coffee bed, logging water temperature every 5 seconds to verify if it stays within the critical 196°F–205°F Golden Cup extraction zone.
We measure exact water delivery rates and inspect wet coffee grounds under high-intensity lighting to detect dry channels or unextracted pockets across flat-bottom and cone baskets.
We test brewed coffee using optical digital refractometers to measure Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). An ideal brew hits 1.15%–1.45% TDS with 18%–22% extraction yield.
We track carafe temperatures over 1, 2, and 4 hours. We evaluate sensory taste profiles to ensure coffee retains aromatics without developing burnt or sour off-flavors.
